How MedTech Training works

Legacy Pharmacy provides Med Tech training with a 6-hour
certification course and a 2-hour annual renewal. This training
prepares students to assist patients with self-administered
medications in ALFs and healthcare settings.

6-Hour Med Tech
Certification

In Florida, Med Techs assist ALF and home health residents with medication management. Legacy Pharmacy’s 6-hour certification course, led by a Registered Pharmacist, trains students in essential medication protocols, focusing on the Six Rights of Medication Administration and relevant regulations. The course includes hands-on practice and covers key areas:

    Skill Development

    Training includes vital signs measurement, assistance with various medications, and specialized care tasks like applying anti-embolic stockings, managing colostomy bags, and performing blood glucose checks.

    Certification

    After completing the 6-hour training course, students will receive a Med Tech certification valid for twelve months from the course completion date.

    2-Hour Med Tech Annual
    Renewal Certification 

    The 2-Hour Med Tech Annual Renewal Certification is essential for current medication technicians who must maintain their certification. This course ensures that Med Techs remain current with the necessary skills and knowledge to assist with self-administered medications and adhere to safe medication practices. This training is mandatory for Med Techs in assisted living facilities (ALFs) and home care agencies in Florida, who must complete it annually to stay certified. 

    Course Benefits

    Understanding Prescription Labels

    Learn to read and interpret prescription labels accurately. Assist with oral medications by measuring liquids, breaking or crushing tablets, and handling topical forms like creams, drops, and sprays. 

    Recognizing and Responding to Medication Orders 

    Identify medication orders requiring professional judgment, report adverse drug events (ADEs), and recognize general side effects of medications and drug classes. 

    Vital Signs and Monitoring 

    Obtain vital signs, apply and remove anti-embolic stockings, care for colostomy bags, and perform blood-glucose checks using a glucometer.  

    Medication Management 

    Complete Medication Observation Records (MORs), and handle medication retrieval, storage, and disposal properly.  

    Assistance with Medications 

    Support self-administration of insulin pens and manage oxygen therapy with nasal cannulas, nebulizers, and CPAP machines.  

    Certification

    After completing the 6-hour training course, students will receive a Med Tech certification valid for twelve months from the course completion date.
